Resource Title Development of a Retrofit Scheme for RC Columns Using GFRP Near-Surface Mounted and Confinement System
Date Issued 17 January 2026
Abstract This thesis investigates the structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns retrofitted with externally bonded (EB) and near-surface mounted (NSM) glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) systems. Six columns were tested in four-point static bending, and another set was tested in axial compression to evaluate the effects of corner geometry, circularization, and strengthening scheme. Finite element models developed in Ansys 2024 R2 reproduced experimental behavior and were used to generate full axial-flexure (PM) interaction diagrams. Theoretical models were used to validate both the numerical and experimental results. The developed GFRP retrofit schemes were compared to alternatives such as steel jacketing and NSM steel rebars, considering differences in structural performance and material cost. The study demonstrates that retrofitting using GFRP can significantly improve the capacity of RC members while promoting durability and sustainability, contributing to more resilient built environments.
